Arnold Böcklin (16 October 1827 – 16 January 1901) was a Swiss painter who made five versions of his Isle of the Dead. They are Late Romantic, proto-Surrealist paintings, and when I encountered them as a young man, I found them gripping. At the time I didn't realize there were five of them - that would've been extra thrilling. I still like them. Here they are in chronological order:
#1 - Basel version 1880 (above)
#2 - New York version 1880
#3 1883 Berlin version 1883
#4 1884 version, destroyed during WWII
#5 Leipzig version 1886
Apparently there was a sixth version, which was completed by his son, but I don't know anything about that. And five’s good enough.
